Quick answer

Where can you download the current Gothic 1 Remake demo?

The current trial is Gothic 1 Remake - Demo (Nyras Prologue), a standalone prequel starring Nyras. Steam and GOG list the PC demo as free in the checked stores. PlayStation and Xbox have official Demo entries, but availability and price can vary by account region. Use the matching official store button above; this guide does not host game files or link third-party mirrors.

Nyras Prologue is a self-contained prequel, not a short version of the full campaign. You play Nyras, a newly convicted prisoner on his first day in the Colony, before the Nameless Hero arrives. THQ Nordic describes it as roughly one hour long, set in a limited area with a smaller set of mechanics. Treat that duration as a publisher estimate; exploration and combat pace can change how long your run takes.

The full Gothic 1 Remake launched on June 5, 2026. The demo remains a separate store listing and experience. Its latest public demo-specific update note we could verify is dated May 9, 2025, but the store metadata does not publish a separate demo build number. Do not read a later full-game patch number as the Nyras demo version.

Official footage

See the Nyras Prologue before installing

The trailer is the official Nyras Prologue demo video linked by THQ Nordic. It shows the Colony, Nyras and the demo's combat tone, so it helps set expectations before you decide whether to install.

Keep the footage in context: the publisher says the prologue uses a small part of the world and limited mechanics. It is a preview of atmosphere and combat, not a complete tour of the full Gothic 1 Remake.

How to download the Gothic 1 Remake demo on each platform

Pick the store you use and confirm that the page is for Gothic 1 Remake - Demo or Nyras Prologue before installing. The store pages below are official product listings; buttons and account prompts can vary by region.

1

Steam on PC

Open the official Gothic 1 Remake Steam page and choose its current Download Demo option. The old demo app URL can redirect to the main product listing, so use the visible Demo button there.

2

GOG on PC

Open the Nyras Prologue page, add the free demo to your GOG library, then install it. GOG says Galaxy is optional and offers an offline installer.

3

PlayStation 5

Open the PS Store demo page, select Add to Library, and install it from your PS5 library. Check that the edition says PS5 Demo.

4

Xbox Series X|S

Open the official Microsoft Store entry, check availability in your account region, then add the Demo and install it on an Xbox Series X or Series S.

What you play

What does Nyras Prologue include?

The demo begins with Nyras, a new convict entering the Colony. Instead of replaying the Nameless Hero's opening, it gives you a separate prequel story and a short quest in the Valley of Mines. You can explore the opening area, speak with other prisoners, look for secrets and try the remake's combat.

That makes the demo useful for a first impression of the visual direction, the Colony's atmosphere, interaction, movement and early combat. It is also a practical way to see whether Gothic's deliberate, demanding RPG style appeals to you before spending time with the full game.

Set expectations carefully. THQ Nordic says the prologue takes place in a small section of the world and uses a limited set of mechanics. It does not contain the full game's intended freedom, progression or simulation depth. The publisher's approximate one-hour estimate is a guide, not a timed limit; players who search every corner or struggle through combat may take longer.

Story role

Nyras is the playable character in this standalone prologue. The full game follows the Nameless Hero.

World size

The demo samples a small opening area; it is not an open-ended run through the complete Valley of Mines.

Best use

Judge atmosphere, early interaction and combat feel. Use the full-game review and guides for the larger campaign.

Avoid the common mix-up

Nyras Prologue vs. the 2019 Gothic Playable Teaser

Search results and old forum posts may call both experiences a Gothic Remake demo, but they refer to different builds. The Gothic Playable Teaser came out in 2019 as an early prototype used to gather community feedback. The current Nyras Prologue was released in February 2025 as a separate, standalone prequel.

THQ Nordic's Steam FAQ says the team decided to start the remake from scratch after collecting feedback on the 2019 teaser, and that the later game would have little in common with that early version beyond some visual assets. The studio also explains that Nyras is a different character from the Nameless Hero. If you remember the 2019 teaser, do not use it as a reliable preview of the current demo or full game.

2019 Playable Teaser

A standalone prequel featuring Nyras and a limited slice of the remake's world.

PC checklist

Demo requirements, free space and version details

The official PC requirements list Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, an Intel Core i7-7700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X, 16 GB of RAM, a DirectX 12 graphics card with 8 GB VRAM, and 10 GB of available storage. Recommended memory is 32 GB and recommended graphics list 12 GB VRAM. Confirm the live Steam or GOG page before installation because requirements and store packaging can change.

Do not mistake 10 GB of required free space for the download size. Neither the checked official listings nor the public demo changelog provided a stable, verifiable package-size figure or a separately numbered demo build. On GOG, an offline installer is offered and Galaxy is optional; that describes delivery choices, not the exact file size.

The May 9, 2025 THQ Nordic changelog names changes such as faster movement and loot animations, added languages, stability fixes and combat adjustments. It does not name a build number. The full game has its own updates after release; they should not be copied into a demo version field or used to imply the demo contains the same build.

Before installing, check PC and console separately. On Windows, confirm that the OS is 64-bit and the selected drive has enough available space. Store labels can vary by language or region, so check that the listing is for Gothic 1 Remake Demo / Nyras Prologue before adding it. Console players should use the official store for their account region; PC CPU and GPU requirements do not apply to consoles. If a local store does not show the Demo, check the region and publisher updates instead of using third-party mirrors. This site does not host installers or publish unverified package sizes.

If the install is confusing

Gothic 1 Remake demo download checks

If the demo button seems missing, first open the full Gothic 1 Remake store page rather than searching for a file mirror. Steam currently shows the demo option on the full product listing; the old separate demo URL may redirect there. On console, the store entry is listed as Gothic 1 Remake - Demo and can be added to your library.

Check the selected platform, account region and free space before restarting a download. If your storefront says unavailable, use the same official store from the console or account region you actually use. Avoid third-party repacks, executable mirrors or instructions that ask you to disable security tools; this site has no installer and cannot validate files hosted by someone else.

The Demo redirects to the game page

Use the Download Demo option on Steam's official Gothic 1 Remake product page. Do not download an unrelated full-game package.

Your console cannot see it

Open the dedicated PS5 or Xbox Series store entry for your account region, then confirm the Demo's price and availability before adding it to your library.

Your drive reports low space

The PC requirements specify 10 GB available space. Check available storage; do not assume this number is the exact download size.

What to read after trying the demo

If the atmosphere and combat work for you, move on to a spoiler-light beginner guide before entering the full campaign. If you want to decide whether the remake suits your tastes, read the existing review for a broader assessment instead of treating a short prologue as a full-game verdict.

If you are comparing console and PC editions, use the platform guide. For story and world questions, start from the Wiki index. Keeping those topics on their existing pages helps this demo guide answer one thing well: how to identify, install and understand the current Gothic 1 Remake trial.

Common questions
